MNR

Another nice Monday night down in the books. The temp was near perfect for a spectacular Monday night ride at Tranquility. It was windy, but if you played your cards right, it actually helped you on some of the climbs. Some being the key word! My legs were smoked by the end of the ride, as were Jena's and also Cody's. Three days of straight riding is about the limit for me.

Jena tackling the last turn in the hill climb

I know how much Jena wanted to ride her new cruiser, but she agreed to ride dirt with the gang. I even convinced her to ride the Muk on the way back to Paul's. A rare sight indeed, I think it even surprised a rider or two when we pulled into Paul's driveway.

An quick THOR meeting was held discussing the future of the trail at Lake Manawa. Steve had maps of the before and the proposed after for Lake Manawa. Lots of possibility still available and nothing is set in stone quite yet. In the next few weeks, walking and flagging of the trail will be taking place. If you want to take part in the future shape, terrain, and flow of the trail, get a hold of Steve D or drop a line on the THOR FB page. Until next Monday!

I'm easily impressed

"What's that?" I asked my coworker as she walked by with a weird contraption in her hand. I don't remember her exact words, but she said it was a pineapple thing-er-upper. Insert cut or puller-outer into thing-er-upper and you'll describe this kitchen tool perfectly. I've had this recent addiction to eating pineapple and this only fuels the desire.

Tada! Done in less than 1 minute.

The grass is green!

With the rain that we got last week, green and sprouting is the word that I would best use to describe nature right now. Besides my allergies killing me, it's nice to be outside in the sun and in this beautiful weather. Got some good riding in, Tranquility on Saturday and Jewell today with Cody. It's been two years since I've been to Jewell and there were a few surprise log crossings and small dirt jump that caught me off guard. Riding with suspension, no problem. Except I wasn't riding my Trek, just the natural suspension of the fat walled fatties! Can you say bu-bump!

I love the color of these trees. They are everywhere! But they're also making me sneeze like a mad man!

This can't be good. Turns out the guy is alright, but dislocated his shoulder. He's now trying to find his bike and camelback/backpack. If any info, please post on FB THOR page.

Thank you Eric very much for getting the sod cutter out. Next time let us know when you need help!

Cleaned my bike. Man it was a filthy mess!

Finally downloaded another trial version of Sony Vegas. Have lots of videos to put together. Messed around a little bit with a video from today. Can you say fall down? Ohhhhhhh!!! I'm going through the few days or so of snowbiking videos, lots of good angles and material. Can't wait to put them together! Not gonna lie, I miss the snow!

At the end, I go over the logs crossing and go "Oh!". Did some slow motion repeats of it just to see how it works.

No more small animals at the trail?

Cody sent this link to me. Hey Cory, remember that snake you saw at Tranquility last year? I hope it wasn't like this!

Yikes! Snake!

Look ma! No gloves!

There's actually very little snow in the video, so don't worry.

Detox at Standing Bear

It was a nice warm day out. I have tons of books to read and I wanted to get a ride in. I was tempted to lay on the couch all day with the TV on, but how can I waste a perfectly good Sunday? Off to Standing Bear! If only I had a basket on the Mukluk! Yes, it actually crossed my mind as I was putting my book in my Camelback.

I was heading back and the sun was putting out some nice views. I sat around and tried some photos with my little Canon. Started heading home and then the wind picked up. Wow, seriously thought the wind was going to blow me off the trail. Like Chris and I found out on our Ponderosa ride, that wind really catches those beefy sidewalls of the fatties!

Bike for Sight

On April 14, 2012, there is a biking fundraiser that will aid those in need of a cataract surgery. Not put on my by my company, but this sounds like a great event. For every registration, UNMC's International Division of Ophthalmology will perform one cataract surgery on those in need in Haiti. Sounds too good to be true? The best part? Registration is only $20!!!

In addition, each rider gets a tshirt, ID bracelet, complimentary beer tasting from the NE Brewing Company, and a 10% discount to the Bike Way! There is also a raffle for two bikes, donated generously by the Bike Way. Details are in the link below.

Come on guys, for $20 you get all this plus UNMC does a surgery on those in need. I'm planning to do the 20 mile route. Come join me! Links are below.

Tranquility Trailday - Branches and Trash

After riding at Tranquility last Monday, it was clear that a trailday was necessary to whip the place into shape. There were branches everywhere on the ground, along with low hanging trees that practically took the light off of your helmet.

Ten of us plus three dogs made it out for a spectacularly nice sunny Saturday morning. Loppers, rakes, chainsaws, handsaws, and garbage bags were all that were needed this day. Trees and trash were the main focus. All sides of Tranquility were worked on and the one hour flew by. Tranquility finally got the haircut it deserved. A winter's worth of heavy snow really showed its effect on the trees. And the growth since last year was also apparent.

Dave N, Dave M, and myself then proceeded to head to the north of Fort side to clean trash. Eventually, the other crew met up with us on bikes and helped us in finishing the trash clean up.

I can't believe the amount of trash that we picked up just on that section of trail by the houses. We walked out with at least four full trash bags, two full boxes, and a full garbage can of junk. I found laminated fully intact health insurance cards, unopened cans of beer, tons of styrofoam, newspapers, and a ton of plastic grocery bags. Dave M even found a conch shell.

After the trash was picked up, we proceeded to do a lap around Tranquility. It felt good to be out in shorts and short sleeves. The wind eventually picked up by 1pm but that didn't stop the riders and runners from showing up at Tranquility. By the time we left, the parking was nearly full. Thanks to all who came out that morning to help with the trailday!

I was trimming this tree and I heard something move above me. I looked up and it looked like a plastic bag was moving around, but it had weight to it. Upon further inspection I found out it was an owl! It was trying to get out of the branches but kept hitting them like a pinball machine. This was the best picture I could get of it before it flew away.

Trash everywhere

Virgin loppers no more! The conch shell that Dave found

The full can of beer now resides in a new home

Lets RIDE!

Can you believe it? More dirt dumping.

Mmm...sip sip sip.

I knew this mug would come in handy. Except it seems like the warmth of the mug transferred immediately to my now-not-so-cold-beer. Heat transfers!

I'm on a motherf*cking bike

Came across this biking music video. Due to language, it may not be safe for work. Watch it at home, pretty funny. The "stache is phat!"

MNR - A Ride of Opposites

I would consider last night's ride the first spring ride of the year. Temps were in the high 50s and the daylight is sticking around longer. How was Tranquility riding? I wouldn't exactly say great, but it was nice to get out on the dirt. The trail was muddy and at the same time dusty. Temps were warm, but colder towards the end of the night. Branches were down instead of up. The ride started off sunny and ended in the dark. And finally, parts of the trail were hard dirt, while certain parts were muddy and soft.
How many cracked heads did it take to cause this?

Still pretty muddy by the creek. I couldn't even figure out how to walk around this.

Actually, the trail was pretty soft for most of the ride. Energy zapping soft. Your tires would just fill up with mud, make your already heavy enough bike heavier, and it felt like you were riding uphill for most of the ride. It took alot more energy to get through the trail. Or maybe I'm just out of shape. Thanks to Dale for the beers. And thanks to Eric, Dale, and Paul for riding!
