And We're Back!

MNR is back and alive again! No more of those freezing cold paved rides. We're riding dirt again and it's spectacular! For the most part, the trails are dry. Some sloppy moist sections here and there, please just remember to ride right on through it. Don't go off to the side over the grass, you're just making it worse.

Six of us made it out this past Monday to Tranquility. It was slow going for me, seriously first ride in over a month. Sad. As for temps, it was actually pretty chilly. I couldn't feel my toes or fingers during most of the ride. Not really cold, but the wind was gnarly.

Am I ready for the Swanson race this weekend? Nope. I might show up just to get some fresh air, take some photos, and be there to cheer on the friends that will be racing. Good luck to those racing! We'll see with this forecasted rain if it will happen.

THOR Meeting

Yesterday's annual THOR meeting took place where around 40 like minded individuals convened to discuss the future of the trails, the club, and what needs to be accomplished in the year 2014. One cool part was what do we expect or want to see with our trails by 2020. A lot of similar ideas were discussed, one of the ones that I liked the most was the ability to ride to every trail by way of a paved trail or bike lane. Traffic sucks and I would rather not deal with it if I were going to bike to the trail.

Also, another good one that actually our group came up with was a smartphone or tablet app. This app would have updated trail conditions, maps, a calendar of events/races, and also a report button similar to what was on the website.

Talks of maybe a new trail  being looked into and also the addition to a couple of our current trails were also discussed. Good meeting, but man meeting that early downtown on a Saturday really made me tired! New shirt color was also pretty exciting, too bad I had just enough to pay for membership dues! It was also brought up of how THOR is looking to become a chapter of IMBA. It sounds great, but IMBA will take 60 percent of our membership dues and leave us with only 40 percent. Sounds like they will be digging into our wallets a bit, but at the same time they hope to bring on more members to hopefully offset that. Eh, we'll see how it goes.

Issue of BRAIN discusses fat bikes

And how they are helping Nordic ski areas stay in business. Not enough snow to cross country ski, hop on your fatty? Hopefully these two snow activities can exist in peace. Just be respectful of each other, just like trail runners/walkers and mt bikers on singletrack.

This is my amazing friend, Elizabeth

Life is funny when you think about it. You think that you've been having a bad day, days at work seem longer and longer, and sometimes things just don't go your way. But things could be worse. Below is an article that I saw about my friend Elizabeth Edwards who was recently diagnosed with cancer. She just had her surgery done yesterday and is doing well.

Now the funny thing is that she is a ballroom dancer and instructor who is in charge of the dancing with the Omaha stars program. This program just so happens to help raise money for the sunshine kids foundation which helps kids with cancer. And she has been doing this for years. Even after she found out about her cancer, Elizabeth decided to continue on with the show and helped to raise $45,000 before having her surgery performed. Elizabeth is an amazing person and amazing friend. I'm wishing you a speedy recovery Elizabeth.

RHCP performance during the Superbowl

This article was brought to my attention by my sister. Turns out that the instruments were not really played, but the singing was real. Huh? I guess the NFL requested that the Red Hot Chili Peppers not really play during the halftime show, but instead to mime the music. Crazy

We can't be stopped!

Can't be stopped from biking that is. Extreme hot to extreme colds, we do it all. 4 inches of snow out there and my bike and cold weather gear was loaded and ready to go in the Jeep before I even got out of work. Late consults, made even later by the slick roads and getting lost trying to find our building. Ughh...I just wanted to ride in the snow!

Couldn't even drink my water after awhile

Met up with big Mike and rode from the north lot of Tranquility over to the main kiosk, then through the Fort Street loop and back. It was cold and windy, but you warmed up. Until you hit that wind heading back to the north side. It was pure torture. 10 mph winds, with 7 degree temps and -10 windchill. Yikes, it was brutally cold on the face and fingers. Moose mitts and gloves weren't enough towards the end of the ride. Probably the coldest I've ever ridden in. I was planning to just stay out for half an hour or so, but ended up being out for an hour and a half.

Snowy berms were actually quite fun

But at the same time, the riding was fun. I took my usual bike in the snow pics and tried to keep up with Big Mike who kept pushing along. He's an animal, with no complaining about the cold. I on the other hand should have eaten something before leaving work. Was out of energy 3/4 of the way into the ride. The snow was fluffy and staying in the trail was getting harder and harder. All part of riding in the snow, at night, in the cold, in the wind...

I say yes most likely they will. Especially when they see you on this one wheeled beast and your buddy pulls up next to you on his custom Harley. Even worse they will probably disown you as a friend when they find out how much you paid for this thing. Because you know, we all have $53,000 laying around to spend on our toys. But yet, I do find it kind of cool and I want to ride one!
